So one thing about Townsville – it’s not just like moving cities or moving countries or even like moving hemispheres. What it is is moving BIOMES! To be specific: from a cool temperate biome to a hot moist biome. I know I know the clue was in the title. The job is after all working on the “Australian Wet Tropics” so you’ve got to expect that you’ll be in the tropics. – Actually it hasn’t even started raining yet. But I figure rain; I’m at least partially used to rain. And of course it’s hot – although everyone says it’s going to get hotter; lots hotter.
On the upside everyone is super helpful; and the coffee is great! Everything seems really expensive but when you do the dividing thing and remind yourself that you’re using Australian dollars now – NOT UK pounds – its actually not even that outrageous. Still there are parts of the living in Townsville that Yvette in her wisdom has decided to ration out so I won’t get completely freaked from the beginning. For instance mid way through making Sunday morning pancakes (stewed apple and cinnamon thanks to Yvette – I was just making the pancakes). Anyway Yvette hands me a bottle of “aqua-ear” – apparently swimming, or at least putting your head under water, causes fungus to grow in your ears!!! Thankfully Yvette says they aren’t the sort that looks like mushrooms but rather a film of fungus sort. Best not to dwell on it and to just carry on. Stings like crazy – but only so much you can protest if the 12 and 7 year old aren’t making a fuss J.
Monday it was the dubious look in the compost bin, followed by a how-should-I-broach-this-topic look, where the answer was obviously after-dinner. Lid to compost bin must always, ALWAYS be securely air-tightly closed in entrance where a fly might make its way into the bin results very shortly in the obvious follow-on from fly in Compost bin to MAGGOTS crawling everywhere in compost bin. P.S. this is partly why everything, really everything goes either in the fridge or the freezer.
Tuesday was the second reason that everything goes in the fridge or freezer. If you stand still for half a minute outside in bare feet (I’m always in bare feet – cos it’s hot) the ants start biting you, really they are everywhere and they bite!
But the coffee is great! There are three espresso machines at work – and that is just on our floor!
